Among the prisoners to be released on Tuesday are militants involved in deadly bombings and other attacks targeting Israeli civilians and soldiers.

In Gaza and the West Bank, Palestinians were preparing a hero’s welcome for the returning prisoners, seen as resistance fighters.

Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas was to hold a reception for those prisoners being released to homes in the West Bank, said a chief aide, Saeb Erekat.

Ron Kehrmann, whose 17-year-old daughter, Tal, was killed by a Palestinian suicide bomber in 2003, said three militants involved in the attack were slated for release. Kehrmann opposes the deal, he said, because it could result in more Israeli deaths.

“Is the blood of the next captured soldier or citizen less red than the blood of Gilad Schalit?” he asked.

But other bereaved relatives believe the price is worth paying to free the captive soldier, who has been held in Gaza for more than five years.

“To know your son is alive and not be able to hold him, this is the worst possible thing,” said Yosefa Goldstein, whose daughter Sari, 21, died in a 2002 bus bombing.

The debate over the release has led some to take the law into their own hands.

Shvuel Schijveschuurder, 27, lost his parents and three siblings in 2001 when attackers blew up a crowded pizza restaurant in Jerusalem, killing 15 people. A Palestinian woman who transported the bomber to the restaurant is among those slated for release.

On Friday, Tel Aviv police arrested Schijveschuurder for vandalizing a memorial to the assassinated Israel Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin in protest of the swap.

Last week, after the decision was announced, his 20-year-old sister, Lea Schijveschuurder, stood outside a Jerusalem protest tent where 300 supporters of the deal were celebrating. She held a sign that read, “My parents’ blood shouts from the grave.”

Islamabad: Gilani dropped his earlier pre-condition of militants giving up arms before any talks, but warned that if the parleys fail to work, the military will launch operations in the tribal areas.
“If negotiations fail to work, the government will launch military operations in the tribal areas,” he told a small group of journalists at his residence in Lahore last night.
The proposed talks will be monitored by a parliamentary committee to ensure transparency and civilian oversight of the process, he said. “We want to give peace a chance now…The national interest is above everything, we will give people a chance to reconcile.”

A Shanghai subway train crashed into a stopped train during a signal failure Tuesday, injuring more than 270 people in the latest trouble for the newly expanded transportation system in China's commercial center.

The signal failure meant trains on Line 10 were being directed via phone by subway staff instead of electronic signals and thus were running at lower speeds, Shanghai Shentong Metro Group said in a statement. That line opened last year and is one of the city’s newest.

At least 271 people were hurt, none seriously, said Xu Jiangguang, head of the city’s health bureau. Some of the injured were carried away on stretchers, however, and 30 were being kept overnight for observation.

“This is the darkest day ever for the Shanghai subway. Regardless of the cause or responsibility, we are stricken with remorse for having caused our passengers injury and losses,” the company said in an apology posted on its blog. “We want to deeply, deeply apologize.”

The signal system is a product of Casco Signal Ltd., a joint venture of China Railway Signal and Communication Corp. and Alstom, which reportedly supplies signal systems to a number of subways in Chinese cities including Beijing, Shanghai, Tianjin and Shenzhen.

Casco was blamed for a subway train crash in Shanghai in 2009, and it was the supplier of a centralized traffic control system for a railway in east China’s Zhejiang Province where two bullet trains crashed on July 23, killing 40 people and injuring 177.

That accident exposed festering resentments over the huge costs of the country’s massive buildup of its rail system, especially its high-speed lines.
